I am strolling over the sand tailing dump of the Kudremukh Iron Ore Co Ltd at Lakya Dam on
Kudremukh Mountain which falls in Chikmaglur Distt of Karnataka. The company built a 100 meter high earth - fill dam across the Lakhya tributary to prevent pollution of the river Bhadra . As part of its continuing anti-pollution program, the company has undertaken the work of increasing the height of the Lakhya dam to contain tailings from the plant. As part of its afforestation program, the company has already planted nearly 7.5 Million trees to prevent mine run-off and soil wash-off. Presently as I m walking over the tailings I can feel the auora of dust and tailings sweeping into my lungs and the particles almost crushing under the teeth. We can see the wind blown dust flying miles together as a sandstorm over the lakya dam valley. Such silt tailings have become the abondoned ground of the industrial pollution which needs to be taken for litigation for creating havoc in terms of air and water pollution. But on the other side of the hill if you trek on the Kudremukh Mountain it is full of life with beautiful plants, herbs shrubs and trees in the valleys and various grasses on the grassland hill tops. Aren't we polluting our environment ?
